Books Featuring Mental Illness

If you’ve followed me here or elsewhere for long, you’ll know I’m a huge bookworm–and especially, a lover of historical fiction! I always get excited when I stumble on a book that features a character with chronic illness, disability, or mental illness, because they’re just so few and far between. So I thought I’d take a moment and share a couple I’ve come across. In keeping with my personal niche, these are all historical fiction books, and all clean reads that would be appropriate for all ages.

Fair As a Star– Mimi Matthews

This beautiful book includes a storyline about depression and off-page suicidal attempt. All of it is written tastefully, in a non-triggering way. What I loved about this story is the way the character advocates for herself, and also the way the male main character finds creative ways to support and help her. While she feels her mental illness is something shameful and that she ought to keep hidden, he accepts it as part of the whole person she is, and loves her through her struggles.

Miss Wilton’s Waltz– Josi Kilpack

This Regency-era story is sweet and simple, but does a good job of painting a picture of life with social anxiety. I appreciated the specific coping skills the main character uses to help herself in challenging situations, all of which are equally applicable in real life. This story would be especially appropriate for a young reader, with sweet romance and nothing too intense.

Veiled in Smoke– Jocelyn Green

Set during the Great Fire of Chicago, in the aftermath of the Civil War, this book does a great job of helping the reader understand the real impact and experience of depression and PTSD. The affected character grows increasingly detached and agitated, struggling to cope with his reality and his past. His loved ones at times struggle to know how to help him–also true to real life–but they support him and grow together through the challenges.

How about you? Have you come across any books that speak to mental health issues? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
